For some-more than 5 decades and 3 generations, Guy Gunter Home has been installing high-end kitchens in Atlanta. The business was founded in 1952 by Gunter himself, a commander during World War II who flew on ancestral missions like D-Day. Returning to his local Atlanta, he became a “flying salesman,” piloting a single-engine craft all over a Southeast to sell cutting-edge appliances. Recently, we asked Gunter, now 97, to simulate on his career:
How did we sell appliances behind in a day?
We put on cooking schools. we put on a initial and largest cooking propagandize in Savannah in 1952. We gave divided a Hamilton garments dryer, a Chambers range, and a Servel fridge as doorway prizes. A grocery store gave divided 40 baskets of groceries. Back afterwards there was segregation, so blacks had to lay upstairs. The initial day a blacks filled adult a upstairs, so we went on a radio and advertised that they could lay anywhere they wanted. We didn’t have any problems.
You had some crafty gimmicks.
I was offered a line of gas refrigerators, and my hermit was going to Georgia Tech. we asked if he could offshoot adult a record actor so that when we non-stop a fridge doorway it would speak to you. we available a summary saying, “Thank we for opening my door.” That didn’t go over too well.
Tell us about a lava lamp.
I brought a initial lava flare down from a Chicago seat uncover in 1965. When we would revisit a distributor, I’d set a flare on a list and start talking. When it got warmed up, they were amazed. But we wouldn’t let anyone sell them unless they also sealed adult to sell appliances.
When did commercial-style kitchens turn renouned for private homes?
About 1960 we sole a initial built-in fridge in a South, Sub-Zero. No one had ever listened of it before. we also sole a lot of Garlands, blurb stoves for homes. We had to put asbestos siding around a back. We sole to all a movers and shakers. we did Hank Aaron’s kitchen, and Reverend Abernathy’s and Joseph Lowery’s.
Do we ever get sleepy of immaculate steel?
Stainless steel is one of my favorite colors. we started doing that behind in a ’60s. Before that we did a lot of tone since we sole Chambers ranges, and they came in Coca-Cola red, black, pacifist gray, apple green, and jonquil yellow.
What’s a many sparkling technological breakthrough you’ve witnessed?
What’s your series one square of recommendation for someone renovating their kitchen?
Find a good kitchen engineer who will be around for a while. We would take caring of a patron even if it meant entrance out of a possess slot since we knew they were entrance back. A kitchen is complex, and we need help. It’s a many critical partial of a house. guygunterhome.com
