All in a universe Christian Lowden wanted was a decent shelf where he could showcase his steampunk collectibles. So he and his husband, Jake Lowden, started a search.

“We went online, and we didn’t like what we were saying for a price,” Jake Lowden said. “We had this thought to build a shelf ourselves and use black pipe.”

That thought led to another and another, and a shelf. And a shelf gave Christian, 33, and Jake, 23, a thought to start a business, Pipes and Sawdust. It will be one of hundreds of exhibitors during a OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show subsequent weekend during State Fair Park.

Christian, a former machinist and surgical section helper with no carpentry experience, bought a few collection and set to work. That was final June.

Things could have lurched into sitcom domain during this point, presumably finale with Tim Allen somehow stumbling onto a stage with a giggle track. Luckily, Christian’s instincts and machinist credentials served him well.

He initial combined a span of elementary valances to mountain above a vital room windows. With that knowledge underneath his belt, he set to work on a shelf.

He emerged from a knowledge with all fingers intact, a ideal shelf he wanted and an artistic vision: He would repurpose castoff equipment into pieces a Lowdens report as Industrial Chic.

“I’ve always been a tinkerer,” Christian said. “I was a machinist for dual years, and that credentials helps me know how things are put together.”

The shelf now sits along one wall in a Lowdens’ vital room, a elementary lines of black siren and found timber providing a ideal environment for a rubber-band-powered safe, shawl with goggles and other steampunk treasures.

It has some-more domestic association now — a list mounted on a pedestal of an aged sewing machine, a collection of design frames, lamps pieced together from industrial pieces and pieces, all a initial stairs of their blossoming business.

Pipes and Sawdust will have a large assembly during a OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show on Friday by Mar 26. The uncover runs noon to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

‘Touch of industrial’

Visitors to a Pipes and Sawdust counter can see for themselves what mixing wooden pallets and other found equipment with imagination can produce.

More new projects embody smaller equipment such as design frames and portion trays. Those have valid popular, Christian Lowden said. “You can have a reason of industrial though entirely investing in a room. It adds a small flair.”

In a seminar in their southwest Oklahoma City home, he runs a palm over a table-in-progress that also will make an coming during a uncover before it goes to a new home. Cargo timber forms a top, ash plugs stuffing a holes left by a bolts that once fixed a planks to a building of a lorry trailer. A square of flare salvaged from an aged stable will supplement a country touch.

“Apparently, a stable burned,” he said, branch a flare over to exhibit a whip mark. “But a patron wants us to paint around it so it can be a review piece.”

The seminar shelves reason lots of fodder. One new plan incited an aged microphone into a list lamp, and destiny projects could incorporate any series of junk store finds or maybe what appears to be a oil-field cavalcade bit that recently assimilated a collection.

Some projects come together; others not so much.

“Lots of lessons schooled to request in a future,” Jake Lowden pronounced with a laugh.

Customers get copiousness of input, means to select woods, hardware and finishes. Jake has been holding caring of finishes and other details.

“I’ve been a amatory father and understanding partner, though we wish to turn a full-on partner in this,” he said. “I’ve started holding a some-more active role, a small some-more carpentry. It’s all been really most a corner effort, though we had to grow.”

They eventually wish to open a brick-and-mortar store, and they’re already tighten to opening.

“We’re zero if not adventurous,” Christian said. “Welding is a idea this year. We wish to supplement some-more metalwork to a pieces.”

The OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show will also embody live cooking demonstrations, “Backyard Wars” pitting 4 internal landscapers opposite any other, and appearances by dual DIY Network stars, Alison Victoria of “Kitchen Crashers” and Sara Bendrick of “I Hate My Backyard.”
