The UN respect was a good boost. Yet notwithstanding Ndume’s work and others’, some 20 million people worldwide sojourn blind from cataracts. Treat them all, and you’ve marinated half of all blindness. Doing that, however, will need not only camps though also permanent infrastructure to make diagnosis routine. This is one reason former NBA star Dikembe Mutombo built a sanatorium in his hometown of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of a Congo. When Ndume visited, a hospital’s value, and inadequacy, were done clear. Scheduled for 5 days, she stayed for seven, did some-more than a hundred operations, and left a watchful list of hundreds. “It is like this everywhere,” she told me. For each studious she treats, dozens go secret and unseeing: “Always more.”
